Christmas mantel 2013

Saturday, January 12th, 2013 | Permalink

I am finally finding the time to blog some pictures of my 2012 Christmas mantel.  I started with the red barn I had made for Fall.

I turned the red barn over and painted a snowy barn scene on the back.  This started with a little brown and black paint.  I had no idea what I was doing… I just got lucky.

Once I got the barn covered with the brown and black I added some white to look like snow.

All done!  That was easy.  I painted a door on this side and added a wreath.  Now it’s ready for the mantel!

Here are some pictures of the final product….

I have to admit this is one of my favorite of the matels I have decorated.  It was very festive and great for pictures!

Hope you enjoyed seeing it!

Recent Projects

Lots of projects on my list and I finally took some time to do some.

Refinished a jewelry box I bought at an online yard sale over the summer…

Finally finished a Pinterest project I’ve had pinned forever.  At Staples you can buy an “engineering print” for only $6!

I am also getting ready to host my family for Christmas but do not have enough seats!  So I bought some plastic white chairs for about $1 a chair (yes at a yard sale) and found a spray paint at Lowe’s that is good for plastic.  I am painting them RED!  I’m going to add a cushion to make it more butt friendly. ;)

That’s all for now!  Too bad I didn’t have as much motivation to clean my house as I did to work on the projects.  Another day…

Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Monday, December 3rd, 2012 | Permalink

This weekend was full of fun projects.  One of my favorites was a remake of this old Mirror that a friend gave to me in lieu of throwing it out.

It’s been sitting in my house FOREVER taking up space.  I’ve wanted to do something with it since I got it but just never put it on my project list until this weekend.  I started with a coat of black paint.

Once I had the frame painted, I got some chalkboard paint and covered the mirror.

All finished and ready to add to my Christmas decor.

Happy Holiday!

Settee makeover

I bought this settee is few weeks ago from a local online yard sale.  When I brought it home my husband was pretty pissed about the newest addition of “trash” added to the garage.  However, I knew this settee would have a beautiful second life once I had some time to give it some attention.

Once I got started on it hubby must have realized my vision so he helped me strip the old padding off of it.  Either that or he felt sorry for me trying to do it myself.  Either way works. ;)

After getting all the nasty (yes it was very dusty and nasty) padding off, I was ready to sand and paint.

I happened to have a can of black spray paint so I painted it black and put some clear gloss over it.

I got very lucky and happened up on a Christmas store in town that also sold cushions that also happened to have 1 last really awesome Houndstooth cushion that appeared to be just the right size.  I was even happier to get to the check out and the store owner gave me 20% off!  After a quick trip to Walmart for some $9.88 red throw pillows, I was ready to finish!

I must say it turned out really great and hubby (yet again) had to eat crow and agree that it was a good find.  I put it in my foyer by my Christmas Snowman tree for now.

Now I just need to figure out how to decorate the wall above it when there is a thermometer in the way!

Update:  This is how I ended up decorating over the thermometer.  The bow on the Snowman head covers it just enough without getting in the way.

Happy Fall Ya’ll!

It’s my favorite time of the year again!!!  FALL

Which means it time to decorate the house!  I started with the fireplace of course.  This year I decided to put together a Barn scene.  Luckily I have crafty friends that helped build a barn for me.

Then I went to work on the painting.  I had left over red and brown paint from previous projects so I was ready to go.  I’m not good at faux finishes but I knew I wanted to make the barn as close to reality as I could.  I painted some lines across the top to give dimension.

Now to add the red paint….

At this point I’m starting to really see my vision come to life.  Last step was to add a barn door.

The barn is all done!  Ready for the mantel.

After picking through all my Fall decorations, I finally come up with an idea of how I want to put things together.  Here is the final result.

Needless to say I am thrilled with the outcome.  I can now say I am ready for Fall!

Here are a few close up pictures…. Now time to start on the rest of the house!

Weekend Project – Plate Rack

Monday, February 13th, 2012 | Permalink

I got this cute plate rack from a friend… it was begging for a new coat of paint.

I bought some Red paint and some cute fabric at WalMart and got to work.

I actually don’t have pictures for the grueling process of taking the back off and nailing all the pieces back together.  I almost gave up when it fell into 6 different pieces.

I wrapped the material around the back piece.  And though you can’t tell here this board is ACCIDENTLY nailed to my hardwood floor!  I was devasted when I realized the nails when all the way through to the floor!!!  YIKES

Luckily Hubs was able to pull it up and the nail holes are barely noticeable.  THANK GOODNESS!!!!

Here is the final product!  It’s a plate rack/shelf.

Close up…

And close up of the material… I love it…

Happy Sunday!

Weekend Project

Sunday, September 25th, 2011 | Permalink

Ok here’s a little project  I worked on this weekend. I found 4 of these nightstands at a yard sale and got all of them for $17!

I immediately thought one of them would be a nice companion for the chair I reupholstered a couple weeks ago.  (See that here)  So I decided to give it a little paint, a little fabric and a little TLC this weekend.

I used a glossy white spray paint and didn’t prime it or use a heavy coat because I wanted to keep the wood grain look.

Of course as always I had great help!

Here’s the finished product!

And close up shots of the lamp shade I recovered.  I had no idea what I was doing but once I found a needle and thread I figured the rest out.

I found the material and cute ruffle at JoAnn’s fabric.

And here’s the final shot with the chair.  A nice little set if you ask me!

This project was very cheap and very easy.  I have several more items lined up to do something fun with so stay tuned!

Something Old becomes Something New!

So excited to show off my latest undertaking… reupholstering.  My sister and I decided to go yard selling last weekend.  We considered ourselves very lucky to find a couple of old chairs for $2 and $5.  They were hideous and in serious need of updating so we stopped by Walmart… got some cheap fabric and spray paint and got to work.
Here’s a before shot of the one I got for $5 from a little old man sitting in front of his garage with a “Yard Sale” sign.

First we had to take off the hideous fabric.
Here it is all stripped down.
Next step was to paint over the brown wood with a new color to match the cute fabric we picked out!
Added some new padding…
The last thing left to do was add the new fabric.
Here’s a close up shot of the fabric.
Final product!  I love it.  I am actually surprised at how great this chair turned out!
This was so much fun and a lot easier than I thought it would be.  Check out my sister’s blog here to see the one we reupholstered for her!
Can’t wait to find our next project!

Photo Ladder

I love because of all the great crafting ideas.  My latest project, a photo ladder, came from via Pinterest.
Here’s the idea I wanted to copy.
Luckily, I have a friend that had some tree branches that could be used for the frame.  And he also agreed to nail it together for me!  Gotta love having friends that are handy with tools.  :)
Next I wanted to personalize the frames.  I bought some wooden frames and paint from Hobby Lobby and let the boys each decorate their own frame.  One last trip to Walmart for some ribbon and twigs to add some more color and we were ready to put it all together!
Here is the final project.  I am totally in love with it.
I couldn’t be happier with the results!
Stay tuned for my next project… reuphostering chairs.

Getting Ready for Fall!

Wednesday, August 24th, 2011 | Permalink

Yes, I know I am a couple months early but I love fall so much that I am already pulling out my fall decorations.  Yesterday my little sister and I decided to make harvest inspired wreaths for our front doors.
We ventured to Hobby Lobby to gather fun fall goodies to decorate with.
Here’s our loot.

We added our family initials to the wreaths.  I wasn’t sure about the color at first but ended up being very happy with my choice.

The final product!  Ready to hang on my front door and welcome the Fall season!
